Patrick and Jean Groves

Missionary, Africa, Kenya, Sudan

While reading the scriptures in spring 1985, a young Jamaican couple, Patrick and Jean Groves, set out to find the “church” spoken of in the book of Acts. God led them to Pentecostal Tabernacle and Pastor Sammy Stewart. Here they received the revelation of the oneness of God, and obeyed Act 2:38. Shortly thereafter, the Lord revealed to them that they would one day carry the gospel to a foreign field. In 1988 they migrated to Canada, where Patrick attended Apostolic Missionary Institute. Before their missionary appointment in March 2004, they saw their home assembly, Weston UPC, grow to become the largest UPC Church in Canada. The Lord blessed them, with three beautiful children, Mary-Elizabeth, Warren, and Joash. The Groves are the first UPC missionaries to be appointed to the predominantly Muslim country of Sudan. They will therefore pioneer the work there.

Dale and Brenda Austin

Missionary, Africa, South Africa

Dale and Brenda Austin have always had a heart for missions. Both grew up in households of pastors who greatly admired the work of missionaries. As a child, Brenda, spent much time around her pioneer missionary grandparents, E.L. and Nona Freeman and was greatly influenced by their passion for souls in Africa. Dale graduated from Christian Life College in Stockton, California, with a major in missions. Prior to becoming a part of Global Missions, they served for nine years as associate pastor and  Director of International Ministries in Salt Lake City. During that time, Dale did some short-term Bible school teaching in Germany. In 2019, they went to the country of Namibia in the Associates In Missions program to work with the Ikerds. They served in various capacities that included preaching, as well as teaching the GATS curriculum in several locations around the country. While there, they were asked if they would consider going to South Africa. After much prayer and counsel, and a request from the General Board of the UPCSA, they went to South Africa in December 2019. Since their arrival there, they have been involved in pastoring a church in Vanderbijlpark, a city in the industrial hub of the Gauteng province. From there they would launch out to minister in various capacities and events throughout the country. In 2021, they were promoted to Associate Missionary status, and in May 2023 they were appointed as Intermediate Missionaries to South Africa. They continue to preach and teach around the nation and work with the GATS program, while also assisting in the administration of the UPCSA.

Travis and Chihaya Craig

Missionary, Asia, Japan

Travis felt a call to Asia as a small child, but it wasn’t after he turned eighteen that God called him to Japan. He joined the Marine Corps and through this avenue God brought him to Okinawa Japan. While serving in the military he started working in AIM for Japanese Missions, leading several cell groups on bases, driving the church van, preaching, teaching Bible studies, and ministering to the locals. In 2015 he left the church in Okinawa Japan and moved to a different island to start a church in Miyakojima Japan. During this time he was heavily involved in outreach, praying for the sick, hospital visits, working in the communities, teaching Bible studies, pastoring, counseling, leading cell groups, teaching Purpose Institute classes, and recently started having worship and preaching in public park areas. It was through these efforts that he met his Japanese wife who now supports him greatly in church bookkeeping, worship, translation, counseling women, teaching Bible studies, outreach efforts, and preparing meals for cell groups. They were appointed as Intermediate Missionaries May of 2022. They love the people of Miyakojima and the nation of Japan and look forward to great revival.

Lonnie J. and Damarys Burton

Missionary, South America, Venezuela

Lonnie James Burton, the son of Lonnie R. and Gail Burton, arrived in Venezuela as a two and a half-year-old child and was raised in Venezuela. He grew to be a youth pastor and musician in Barcelona and in other churches in eastern Venezuela where his parents ministered. He returned to the states when he was eighteen to attend Indiana Bible College, graduating in 1997. He then returned to Venezuela in the following fall as an AIMer, working in the Bible school in Valera. During that time he ministered on the weekends as an evangelist and started to open churches in the Andes Mountains. After starting a work he would pastor them until there was a graduate from the Bible school that wanted to pastor that work.

He later married Damarys Martinez, whose father was a pastor and sectional presbyter. Together they worked as caretakers, administrators and teachers at the National Bible School. During this time they were able to start four churches, all of which all are still growing and are beautiful congregations today. Lonnie and Damarys received their missionary appointment to Venezuela in February 2004 and started deputation in September 2006. Upon their arrival in Venezuela, November 2008, they were given immediate oversight of the Bible school in the city of Valera as the directors. In the last four years working with the Bible school, the Burtons have seen over 230 students graduate. They also pastored a church during this term in the Andes Mountains called La Puerta for over two years. Also, they are involved in the Education and Missions Departments in the Venezuelan church and are still helping to establish more churches in this nation. During 2013-2015 they came back on deputation to raise more funds and special projects for the Nation of Venezuela. Upon their arrival May of 2015 they continued their work as Directors of the National Bible School in Venezuela in the City of Valera. In October they moved to another city in the east of Venezuela called Barcelona/Puerto La Cruz. In this area is where their main focus has been since 2013 for a new Bible school. In the last four years, they have seen over 462 students graduate. In forty-two years, “The Conquerors Bible School” has Graduated over 1870 of which 80% of them are pastoring in works here in Venezuela and around the world. Venezuela is having revival!

Logan became involved with missions in 2008 and has been serving on the Associates In Missions program for the last five years. He was appointed as an Associate Missionary with the AIM program in 2014. Hannah, a missionary kid, grew up with a love for Africa and missions. She graduated from Indiana Bible College in May of 2015. Both Logan and Hannah were actively involved in missions on the AIM program when they met in 2015. After their marriage in 2017, they returned to the mission field to await their full-time appointment with Global Missions which occurred in September 2017.
While serving as an Associate Missionary on the AIM program in Togo, Logan was an instructor at the Bible school. He was also an active evangelist in the country. Hannah was also actively involved in children’s ministry and served as the children’s ministry coordinator for the country of Benin. As the first resident missionaries to Guinea, Logan desires to focus on establishing a strong church in the capital city of Conakry, where there is currently no church. Michael and Danan Benson

Missionary, Africa, Benin, Central African Republic

The Bensons received their appointment to Central African Republic in 2007, after having spent a year on the Associates In Missions program in Madagascar. Due to the civil unrest in the Central African Republic, they have not been able to move into this country. Therefore, they have spent the last two terms working in the countries of Togo and Benin, while making frequent trips into the Central African Republic as circumstances permitted. During their last four years in Benin they constructed and opened a full-time Bible school facility in the city of Ouida. They have also instituted the GATS Training Program via night classes in the city of Cotonou. Teaching and training is the passion of the Bensons.
